A recap of 2023’s Tune-Up Tuesdays series
We kicked off the new year with Journey’s popular Tune-Up Tuesdays series. Folks typically realign their priorities in January, vowing to “do better” about their health and perhaps pick up a new skill. Well, we wanted to aid in that process — we all help each other, after all! So, every other Tuesday at 2 p.m. in January, we visited registered participants live via Zoom with our expert of the week, offering pro tips for a better 2023. Our engaging presenters gave sound advice on improving your health on points from safe, effective indoor stretching and workouts to optimal nutrition and smart weight loss. To ensure that the poignant moments of the year aren’t left solely to memory, a pro photographer joined us with expert tips on making the most of your smartphone’s camera. To say a good time was had by all in this series is such an understatement. What a fun learning experience — times three! And not to worry if you missed out; individual recaps and video links are below.
Tune Up Your Smartphone Photography: Easy Techniques for Better Pictures
Featuring John Keller, BA, MBA — Owner, Photography by Keller, Photographer & Educator
In this jam-packed interactive session, photographer and photography instructor extraordinaire John Keller shared some of his most popular tips and tricks with Journey friends. You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? We agree, and while we weren’t counting, it seemed as though John had at least a thousand pointers for taking great pictures.
From setting up the perfect shot, holding steady, and getting enough light, to all the gizmos, gadgets, and apps available to you help you enhance, edit, save, and share your art, John knew it all. And now, thanks to his willingness to enlighten us, so do we. Before you watch this segment, you may want to download the free app Snapseed. John recommends it, and it’ll be easier to follow along. Enjoy!
Tune Up Your Indoor Workouts: Stay Active Whatever the Weather
Featuring Sam Dolezal, EdD, MS, MSE, CSCS — Wellbeing Officer at Union Bank & Trust
Don’t let winter weather stand in the way of fitness! We asked Dr. Dolezal, our wellness pro (who goes by Sam), to show us some safe alternatives to an outside stroll or trip to the gym. She gave us that and a whole lot more, including reasons to work out, what constitutes a workout, sneaky ways to incorporate movement into your day, easy equipment choices, and how to put safety first. Not only did virtual attendees learn what makes up an effective and challenging workout, but Sam also covered the importance of warming up, cooling down, and proper stretching. Sam provided us with some fantastic resources to find an alternate workout location (or trainer), and during the Q&A session, she gave examples of three exercises that can be done by virtually anyone. Intrigued and motivated? Fantastic! Click below to have a look.
Tune Up Your Nutrition: Smarter Weight Loss in the New Year
Featuring Jennifer Dunavan, MS, RD, LMNT — Hy-Vee Registered Dietician
There is nothing as inspiring for those embarking on a weight loss journey as time spent with a registered dietician, especially when that dietician is as full of ideas as Jennie Dunavan! Jennie shared insights and intel on achieving successful, sustainable weight loss, starting with motivation, discipline, and ideas for finding your “why” (hint: it’s probably deeper than fitting into a dress for a wedding!). Virtual attendees were treated to a mini lesson in assisting apps and guidelines to make tracking easier, in addition to best practices for grocery shopping, meal prep, and more. An interactive Q&A capped the session. Talk about time well spent!
By the way, if any of the above topics made it into your New Year’s resolutions (probably the first two, but you never know!), check out Sam’s SMART planning video. She has some smart tips to help you keep your eye on the prize!
