Magic Moments: Malachi Hopkins

“Despite facing significant challenges in his own life, Malachi has managed to make an extraordinary impact on the lives of youth and single parents.”

Ashley Hopkins, Malachi’s Mother

Anyone who knows Malachi Hopkins knows that he is determined. When an injury and cancer curtailed football and academics, he started a nonprofit that offers athletic development for kids — and can help remove financial responsibility from already-struggling parents.

It was only Malachi and his mom, Ashley, growing up. He knew how she scraped by, and he didn’t want parents to feel as badly as she did about not providing more. He appreciated the opportunities afforded him, sometimes with the help of the community, and he knew it was important to give back. He’s determined to demonstrate that to the young people he works with — that their circumstances can shape who they become in a positive way. His commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and extending a helping hand every chance he gets speak to that.

Malachi has become adept at turning challenges into opportunities. He initially attended Coffeyville Community College to pursue his passion for football. However, a neck injury forced him to abandon his athletic dreams. As if this setback wasn't enough, Malachi was also diagnosed with cancer. Rather than letting these hardships stop him cold, Malachi channeled his energy into pursuing another passion and established a nonprofit.

“Instead of allowing this setback to define him, Malachi channeled his passion into helping others.”

Growing up with a single parent, Malachi experienced the financial constraints that can limit a child's access to extracurricular activities, particularly sports. Recognizing the profound impact that sports had on his own development, Malachi was determined to give back to his community. This led him to create Everybody Gets a Chance, which offers free training, mentoring, and sometimes scholarships to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow through athletics, regardless of their financial situation.

Living the good life

Today, Malachi is cancer-free and leading by example in promoting health and wellness. This year alone, he has participated in multiple races, including the Good Life Halfsy. Through his dedication to fitness, Malachi is proving the importance of maintaining physical and mental health, especially during tough times.

Despite the obstacles he’s faced, Malachi's work ethic and dedication remain unwavering. He is currently a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where he balances his studies with an internship at Sandhills Global, another company known for its commitment to the community. In addition to his academic and professional responsibilities, Malachi continues to run his nonprofit organization and is busier than ever, as Everybody Gets a Chance will host a fundraising gala in February.

An inspiring duo

Malachi was nominated by his mom, Ashley Hopkins, who described him as an inspiring, selfless young man who demonstrates perseverance and an unwavering commitment to his community. His resilience in the face of personal adversity and his commitment to helping others are qualities that make him a deserving recipient of a Magic Moment. UBT and the Magic Moments committee could not agree more, though we think Ashley sounds pretty inspiring herself. (Nicely done, mom!)

A holiday for a hero

UBT and our amazing partners pooled resources to give Malachi a holiday deserving of the hero he is. He was presented with tickets to favorite sporting events, and we hope he takes mom to at least one! Because he’s not always in spectator mode, Malachi received athletic gear of his own. New winter clothing will keep him warm, and a muffler repair and gas cards ensure that Malachi gets everywhere he needs to go during the blustery season ahead. Speaking of going, some special gifts were designed to speak to Malachi’s passion for travel. We want to thank Malachi for being a force for positive change in his community. We wish him, along with his mother, a holiday as amazing as they are and look forward to seeing the continued impact of Everybody Gets a Chance in the years to come.
