Magic Moments: The Scheinost Family

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Lindsey and Matt Scheinost had built a beautiful life together. They’d been high school sweethearts who achieved their dreams together. After two amazing additions to the family, Avarie, now 10, and Kaysen, who’s 6, their bond only seemed to grow stronger. However, their journey took a heartbreaking turn in 2022 when Matt was diagnosed with colon cancer. He fought valiantly and it seemed like they had won the battle when Matt went into complete remission.

Life can be cruelly unpredictable, though, and in June 2024, the cancer returned with a vengeance. By the time it was discovered, it had spread too far, and Matt passed away in September. It’s hard for Lindsey, Avarie, and Kaysen to navigate a world without Matt, but they do it. They want to honor his life by living theirs in a way which would make him proud — Lindsey insists on it.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
— John Dewey

Lindsey had always dreamed of being a teacher. Her passion for education led her to Lefler Middle School, where she has worked for more than 15 years. Starting as a paraprofessional, Lindsey’s dedication to her students and her own education saw her complete her doctorate degree. She now teaches 8th grade English and is beloved by her students. The feeling is mutual, and Lindsey goes above and beyond to connect with each of them, making a lasting impact on their lives. That commitment extends further than the classroom, as she serves on several committees and leads staff development, always striving to improve the educational experience for all.

Anything educational is a hit at home, too, as Lindsey passed that passion for learning on to her own kiddos. Arts and crafts sessions are also a regular occurrence, and the trio really enjoys baking together, whipping up delicious treats along with family warmth and laughter. More than any specific activity, the family simply cherishes family time, finding comfort and joy in each other’s company.

“Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.”
— Samuel Smiles

Lindsey was nominated by fellow teachers Erin Pauley, Erin Froistad, Stephanie Vandarwarka, and Amber York. All four described how she has faced unimaginable loss but continues to move forward with grace and strength. They see her as a source of inspiration, radiating joy and hope. UBT thought that this selfless, giving lady who never asks for anything was deserving of some holiday enchantment (Matt would have agreed). Our Magic Moments team, together with our generous partners, set out to make some magic happen for the Scheinost family.

No snow to shovel, a special dresser, and a Mario car

Snow shoveling and pet patrol were always Matt’s domain, and not necessarily something Lindsey has time for these days, so we’re hoping gifts of professional snow removal and dog walking will help clear her plate. With the newfound free time, maybe she can break out her shiny new mixer for a family bake-off, or get out for the pedicure and other pampering we lined up for her. At the time of his passing, Avarie and her dad were looking for a vanity for Avarie’s bedroom, so this piece of furniture, along with some other fun items she’s had her eye on, were delivered by our Magic Moments elves. Those same elves presented Kaysen with Legos (his passion), a remote-control Mario car, new shoes, and more.

This togetherness-loving artsy family also received some art supplies and classes from Lux Art Center, and enough memberships, passes, and tickets to keep them in outings, events, movies, and activities for a full year! Gift cards, gas cards, and groceries will help offset the food and fuel costs, as we’d like for Lindsey to be able to coast for a while. (Put your feet up, Lindsey.)

Lindsey, your dedication to your children, your students, and your contemporaries is inspiring. We admire your ability to find joy in the little moments, and wish you and your family a most joyous holiday season. Happy Holidays from UBT, Scheinost!
