“The love between father and son is priceless.”
— Deborah Roberts, nominator
Micah is an adorable, sensitive 4-year-old. He dotes on his dad and grandma and is so receptive to them as he learns to communicate and to navigate his little world — which is getting bigger all the time, thanks to his dad.
Micah stopped breathing when he was about two months old, and a terrified Michael was walked through giving him life-saving measures until the paramedics could arrive. The cerebral palsy was uncovered some time later. Deborah Roberts, Michael’s mother, nominated the family for a Magic Moment (she would nominate Michael for father of the year, if she could) because she believes this super dad deserves some special love this season for his dedication to providing exceptional care for his son. UBT agreed!
A bond of love
Micah is wheelchair-bound and nonverbal, but loves to smile and is pretty good at getting his point across using his hands. Dad Michael works with him a lot, especially on communication, and Grandma Deborah says watching Michael interact with Micah is pure joy. She’s around the pair quite a bit these days; Michael and Micah moved in with Deborah recently. It helps Michael as he has medical and other recent expenses, and Micah really benefits from their team approach to his care. Everyone is focused on Micah’s success as he continues to grow and thrive.
Above all, the Roberts family just enjoys being together. They like family outings, movies, and sports. The love they have for each other is apparent, and little Micah really is the star of the show. As long as he’s included in their plans, they’re all pretty much in their happy place.
Making the holidays bright
In her nomination, Deborah painted an incredibly beautiful picture of this family. She has so much admiration and respect for her son and felt he was deserving of some recognition for all that he does to provide his son with the best life possible. But in talking with this proud mom and grandma, it became clear to the Magic Moments team that the three of them were really a package deal, so we’re celebrating all three members of the Roberts household this holiday season.
UBT worked with our amazing partners to provide help with groceries, in addition to a year’s worth of family outings and lots of sports-themed apparel and fun. Each family member received special gifts, chosen just for them to make the moment even more magical. Roberts family, UBT wishes you all things bright and beautiful this season, and we hope all your holiday wishes come true!
