Paying for items when you’re out and about is a cinch now with your smartphone’s mobile wallet. You can use this built-in mobile phone service just about anywhere — farmers markets, local merchants, big-box department stores, convenience stores, fuel pumps, and more!

We are aware, however, that the first time you use a mobile wallet can be a bit intimidating. In fact, there are people right here at UBT who just needed a little coaching and encouragement the first time they pulled out their phone to pay! But once you get the hang of using a mobile wallet, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

How to use your mobile wallet

For the following instructions, you’ll need to have your card(s) entered into your device’s mobile wallet app already. If you haven’t done that crucial first step, don’t worry — we have a blog for that too! Once you get that done, pop on back to learn how to pay with a mobile wallet!

  1. Look for the Contactless symbol on the terminal at checkout. It will look something like the one below. If you see any variation of this symbol, that means your mobile wallet will work to pay.
    tap to pay icon
  2. Take out your phone and navigate to your mobile wallet app. On newer Apple devices with quick access enabled, it’s as simple as clicking the power button twice when your phone is on its lock screen. On a newer Samsung device with quick access, swipe up from the bottom of the screen on lock screen. (Note: Your experience may vary depending on your phone’s make and model — for the most accurate instructions, we recommend consulting your device manufacturer’s website.)
  3. If you’ve put multiple cards into your mobile wallet, choose your UBT card from the list of options. If you are able to name your saved cards on your device, it’s a good idea to use names you’ll remember easily, especially if you have multiple cards saved.
  4. Depending on your settings, you may need to enter a passcode. If you have Face ID enabled, hold the phone up so it can see your lovely face and proceed.
  5. Simply place the top of your phone over the payment device or terminal.
  6. Listen for the beep and feel the haptic.
  7. You may need to enter a PIN code if you’re paying with your debit card. Finish the transaction just like you would with a card.
  8. Smile big — you just successfully completed your first mobile wallet transaction!

Paying for online purchases

If you’re shopping online from your mobile phone, most websites will allow you to use Apple Pay® or Google Pay™ to complete your transaction (which means you’re using your UBT debit or credit card in your mobile wallet, and NOT having to save the card’s information in your browser). When you’re on the payment screen, choose the option that fits your mobile device and follow the onscreen prompts to complete your transaction.

Final thoughts

There are a few merchants who don’t accept mobile wallet payments, but many do! It’s always a great idea to check with your merchant first until they get on the tap-to-pay bandwagon.

As always, our friendly people are here to help make your foray into using your mobile wallet to pay an easy one. Give us a call if you need a quick tutorial on how to run your first mobile wallet payment!
